The Sacrament of Holy Baptism is one of the most joyous days in the life of the Church. The celebration of Holy Baptism marks God’s adoption of us as children and makes us members of Christ’s Body, the Church, and inheritors of the kingdom of God.
There are two paths of Holy Baptism in the Episcopal Church: infant baptism and adult baptism.
ADULT BAPTISM Adults who wish to receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism undergo a year-long process of exploring our Christian faith in the Episcopal tradition through a process called the Catechumenate. The process begins in the fall months. Baptism takes place during the Easter Vigil at the cathedral and culminates in the spring through a process called Mystagogia (Living into the Mysteries).
If you are interested in receiving the sacrament of Holy Baptism as an adult, please contact us at cathedral@incarnationgc.org to speak with one of our clergy staff.
INFANT BAPTISM In our tradition, children are baptized so that they can share citizenship in the Covenant of God, membership in the Body of Christ, and redemption by God. Bringing our children to the waters of Baptism is an affirmation that God’s grace can come to us even before our awareness.
In the Holy Baptism for children, they will need parents or guardians present alongside godparents. Both parents and godparents take the solemn vows of Baptism on their young person’s behalf, guaranteeing that their loved child will be brought up within the Church, know Christ and be able to follow Christ’s ways. We celebrate Baptism in community during our 9:15 Cathedral for Kids mass and 11:15 choral mass.
At the Cathedral of the Incarnation, requirements for baptism include contacting Kate Salisbury at ksalisbury@incarnationgc.org for scheduling and more information. We also require a prebaptismal counseling session with one of our clergy staff, which will be scheduled at your convenience via Zoom.
Remaining 2023 Baptism dates are October 8 and November 5.
