From Bishop Provenzano:
I am pleased to announce that the Very Rev. Dr. Michael Sniffen, Dean of our Cathedral, has been appointed by the President of the United States as an officer in the U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps. This rare reserve commission will be fulfilled alongside the Dean’s regular responsibilities leading the cathedral community on my behalf.
Dean Sniffen has responded to an acute need in the armed forces for chaplains with significant pastoral experience and the ability to advise command. As a non-combatant, he will care for active duty navy, marines, members of the coast guard and their families. As a life-long sailor, I know that he will be at home ministering on the waters.
When I recommended Fr. Sniffen for this important ministry last year, he spoke of its connection to the Center for Spiritual Imagination. Launched at the cathedral in 2019, the center is focused on addressing the spiritual needs of those underserved by the church. Currently serving students, food-insecure families and those in jail, this ministry now expands to those in military service through the Dean’s commission.
